Leadership

At Malvern Valley Primary School, every student has the opportunity to lead.

We believe leadership is developed over time, not just in senior years. From Prep to Year 6, students are given meaningful opportunities to build confidence, take responsibility and have a genuine voice in their school.

Leadership at Malvern Valley is grounded in strong student voice and agency. Students are encouraged to share their ideas, represent their peers and take action to improve their school environment. They learn that leadership is about making a positive contribution to their community.

Opportunities such as School Captains, House Captains, the Junior School Council and the Green Team ensure leadership is accessible across all year levels. With class representatives selected each semester in programs such as the Junior School Council and Green Team, more students have the opportunity to develop and practise their leadership skills.

Whether leading assemblies, organising events, supporting younger students, contributing to community initiatives or driving sustainability projects, our students play an active role in shaping a positive, inclusive and forward-thinking school environment.

School Captains

At Malvern Valley Primary School, our School Captains represent the voice of our students and uphold our core values of confidence, cooperation, resilience and respect.

School Captains are selected through a collaborative process involving both staff and students. This reflects our commitment to student voice and agency and ensures our leaders can represent and connect with their peers.

As leaders of the student body, School Captains:

• Represent students at assemblies and key school events
• Assist in the organisation of whole school activities
• Promote school spirit and positive relationships
• Support younger students and encourage leadership across all year levels

This role provides a valuable opportunity to develop leadership, communication and decision-making skills while contributing to the Malvern Valley community.

House Captains

Our House Captains are Year 6 students who demonstrate strong leadership, teamwork and a commitment to our school values.

They lead our four house teams:

• Rob Roy (Red)
• Abbotsford (Blue)
• Ivanhoe (Green)
• Quentin (Yellow)

While House Captains lead their teams during sporting events and competitions, their role extends beyond the sports field. They also:

• Support junior year-level activities
• Help lead lunchtime clubs and games
• Contribute to whole school events and community activities
• Encourage participation, teamwork and inclusion across the school

Through this role, House Captains build confidence and leadership skills while strengthening school pride and connection.

Junior School Council

The Junior School Council is a central part of student leadership at Malvern Valley Primary School and reflects our commitment to student voice and agency.

Students from Prep to Year 6 can be elected as class representatives, with each class selecting a Semester 1 representative and a Semester 2 representative. This allows more students to develop leadership skills and contribute to the school community.

The JSC provides a meaningful platform for students to shape their school. Members:

• Meet regularly to discuss ideas and student identified priorities
• Gather feedback by surveying classmates, teachers and the wider school community
• Plan and lead fundraising initiatives for both the school and charitable causes
• Develop ideas to improve the school environment and student experience

JSC members also:

• Present regularly at assemblies
• Lead and present special events such as Remembrance Day assemblies

Through these experiences, students learn that their voice matters and that they can make a real difference.

Green Team

The Green Team provides students from Prep to Year 6 with the opportunity to take an active leadership role in sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Each class has a Semester 1 representative and a Semester 2 representative, allowing more students to develop leadership skills throughout the year.

Green Team members:

• Develop and implement initiatives to improve sustainability across the school
• Manage recycling and composting systems
• Promote environmentally responsible practices within classrooms and the wider school

They also:

• Share updates and initiatives at assemblies
• Encourage student involvement in environmental action

Through their work, the Green Team helps create a cleaner, greener school while empowering students to take responsibility for their environment.
